About this role

MSc/PhD Student Positions

Gene Regulation in Stem Cell Biology, Brain Development, and Aging

Yang Laboratory – University of Calgary, Canada

About the Project

The Yang Laboratory (yanglaboratory.ca) invites applications from highly motivated individuals for MSc and PhD positions in stem cell biology and neuroscience. Our research uses mouse models to dissect gene regulatory mechanisms governing neural stem cell behavior and neuronal function during brain development and aging. A complementary avenue investigates the molecular and cellular basis of rare neurodevelopmental disorders using patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) models and mouse disease models.

Students will be fully funded and embedded in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment within the Departments of Medical Genetics and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.

Qualifications

Required:

  • BSc or MSc (or equivalent) in biochemistry, bioinformatics, cell biology, developmental biology, genetics, neuroscience, or a related discipline.
    • Prior research experience in wet and/or dry laboratory settings.
      • Self-motivated with strong interest in multidisciplinary research.
        • Excellent academic record and proficiency in written and spoken English.

          Assets (not required):

          • Experience with molecular cloning, mammalian cell culture, mouse genetics, or confocal microscopy.
            • Background in bioinformatics, RNA-seq analysis, or computational genomics.
              • Familiarity with iPSC derivation, differentiation, or disease modeling.

                Funding and Support

All positions are fully funded, including stipend support meeting standard departmental rates. Students are encouraged and supported to apply for internal and external scholarships (NSERC, CIHR, Alberta Innovates, etc.) to supplement their training.

                How to Apply

Please submit a single PDF to info.yanglab@gmail.com with the subject line “MSc/PhD Application – [Your Name]”. The PDF should include:

                1. Cover letter (1–2 pages) describing yourprevious research experience, career goals, and why you are interested in gene regulation, stem cell biology, or brain development and aging.
                2. Curriculum vitae.
                3. Unofficial transcripts (BSc and/or MSc).
                4. Contact information for 2–3 references (letters not required at this stage).

Review of applications is ongoing. Positions are available for 2027 intake. Early applications are strongly encouraged.
