PhD scholarship: Machine learning to predict cancer drug response
About this role
PhD scholarship: Machine learning to predict cancer drug response from pathology slides
A fully funded PhD scholarship is available at the Centre for Cancer Biology, Adelaide University, Australia for a candidate with the skills, interest and motivation to work on this project. The scholarship is open to both domestic and international applicants.
We are looking for someone with a background in bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning, statistics or a related field. Coding skills, such as in R or Python, are essential.
Our work has shown that large genomic changes in cancers, such as gains and losses of chromosomes, better predict how tumours respond to drugs than gene mutations. Detecting them currently requires genomic profiling, which is not routine in most clinics. This project investigates whether machine learning can predict them directly from routine pathology slides, thereby opening new pathways to improve diagnosis and treatment selection for cancer patients.
Expressions of Interest close 30 September 2026 (Australian Central Standard Time).
